In 2023, it will be ten years since the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and five years since its official extension to Latin America. This book is a collective effort that brings together research by social organizations in the region on the main milestones in China’s relationship with nine South American countries. The document looks at Chinese trade, financing and investment, with an emphasis on the energy sector, and the impacts on ecosystems and community rights. To illustrate this impact, the authors analyzed at least 26 projects with Chinese participation related to the energy sector, mainly generation and transmission; the mining sector, in particular minerals critical to the energy transition, such as copper and lithium; and infrastructure associated with connectivity, including roads and ports.<\/p>\n
